a certain shade of 'green'...

Apparently, in the long run (or walk, as it were) walking 1.5 miles to the store and back can be more detrimental to the environment than driving. How? Well, you'll have to read yesterday's Freakonomics blog entry to see.

A related, slightly older post from the same source - apparently cutting water consumption isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I highly recommend this blog (and the book it followed). In fact, the Freak blog is a shining example of using the medium to, as the PR gurus say, 'continue the conversation'. How so? Well, Freakonomics the book was released back in 2005, and with this blog the authors (and some notable guests) have managed to maintain a connection to their audience. (It probably helps that they contribute to the New York Times regularly as well.)

some headlines...

Some interesting headlines taken from my newsfeed. I'm going to try to make a habit to post more of these in the future.

Researches debunk common medical myths (CBC)

The one of greatest interest to me:

People should drink at least eight glasses of water a day: Most of the water we need is available to us through the food and other drinks we ingest, including milk, juice and even caffeinated drinks such as coffee and tea. The standard water to food ratio is 1 millilitre for each calorie.

It's no wonder, then. I know many folks who don't adhere to the 8 glass a day rule and seem to be sufficiently hydrated.

Want happiness? Live east, researchers find (CBC)

Worth noting - the #1 city is actually my birthplace! A colleague joked it should read: Want happiness? Live East. Want a job? Live in Toronto. She couldn't have been more right. Sadly, that's what brought my family to this province, and then me to this city. Some would say it's the worst reason to move to a place, but I'm a little too practical to buy into that.
